Sri Lanka from Australia

Closer and easier than you think

Sri Lanka is one of the easiest long haul holidays from Australia: direct flights, a small time difference and a tourist visa that currently costs nothing.

Direct flights

SriLankan Airlines flies non stop to Colombo from Melbourne and Sydney in around 11 hours. From Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide there are easy one stop connections through Asia.

Small time difference

Sri Lanka is 4.5 hours behind Sydney and Melbourne (5.5 hours during daylight saving) and only 2.5 hours behind Perth. Jet lag is minimal.

Free tourist ETA

Australians are among the nationalities whose tourist ETA fee is currently waived. You still need to apply online before you fly via the official Sri Lanka ETA website.

Perfect for the Aussie summer

The best season for this route, November to April, lines up with the Christmas break, summer school holidays and Easter. It's peak season, so book early.

Great value in AUD

Your Aussie dollar goes a long way in Sri Lanka. Private touring that would cost a fortune elsewhere is surprisingly affordable here.

Local experts on your side

We're a Colombo based team, so you deal directly with the people running your tour. For travel advice, check Smartraveller before you go.

FAQs

Questions from Australian travellers

Can't find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp and a real person from our Colombo team will reply.

Ask us on WhatsApp
How much does a 10 day Sri Lanka tour cost from Australia?

This private 10 day tour starts from around AUD 2,120 per person (Comfort) or AUD 3,120 per person (Superior), based on two people sharing. That includes 9 nights accommodation with breakfast, a private car and chauffeur guide, and all entry tickets and safaris. International flights are extra.

Do Australians need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Australians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving. The tourist ETA fee is currently waived for Australian passport holders, but you must still apply online through the official Sri Lanka ETA website. Rules can change, so please check before you fly.

Are there direct flights from Australia to Sri Lanka?

Yes. SriLankan Airlines flies non stop from Melbourne and Sydney to Colombo, taking around 11 hours. From other Australian cities you can connect through hubs such as Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Flights aren't included in the package, so you can use your own points or preferred airline.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka from Australia?

For this route, November to April is ideal, with drier weather on the west and south coasts and in the hill country. It suits Aussie summer holidays perfectly. The tour runs year round, though, and rain in the tropics usually comes as short afternoon showers.

What's the difference between the Comfort and Superior packages?

Only the hotels. Comfort uses handpicked hotels below 3 star, while Superior uses hotels above 3 star. The itinerary, private car, guide, entry tickets and safaris are identical.

Can we change the itinerary or add more days?

Absolutely. Every tour is private, so we can add beach days, swap hotels, slow the pace for families or older travellers, or extend to the east coast. Just tell us what you have in mind in the enquiry form.

Is the tour suitable for families and older travellers?

Yes. Most days are relaxed sightseeing. The more active parts are the Sigiriya climb (around 1,200 steps) and the Little Adam's Peak walk, and your guide will set a comfortable pace or suggest alternatives if needed.

Is Sri Lanka safe for Australian tourists?

Sri Lanka welcomes millions of visitors and is a popular, friendly destination. Your private guide is with you every day. We recommend checking the latest advice on Smartraveller and taking out comprehensive travel insurance.
