Heading west from Jaffna, the island of Mannar unfolds as a land of history, wildlife, and striking landscapes. Known for its arid beauty and vast stretches of sand dunes, Mannar is home to remnants of the past, including the iconic Mannar Fort. Built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch, this fort stands as a reminder of Sri Lanka’s colonial history.
One of Mannar’s most intriguing sites is the legendary Adam’s Bridge (Rama’s Bridge), a chain of limestone shoals that, according to mythology, once connected Sri Lanka to India. This site holds deep significance in Hindu epics and remains a place of fascination for visitors.
Mannar is also a paradise for birdwatchers. Its coastal lagoons attract thousands of migratory birds, making it one of the best birding destinations in Sri Lanka. Flamingos, herons, and painted storks are common sights, adding a touch of color to the region’s rugged beauty.
