Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 as a refuge for orphaned and injured elephants. Located in the Sabaragamuwa Province, it has since become a well-known conservation center, caring for elephants that are unable to survive in the wild. The orphanage provides a safe environment where these animals are nurtured and given a chance to live in semi-natural conditions.

One of the highlights of Pinnawala is the daily elephant bathing ritual in the nearby Maha Oya River. Visitors can observe herds of elephants as they play and cool off in the water, offering a unique and up-close wildlife experience. The feeding sessions also provide insight into the care given to young elephants, particularly those who have lost their mothers.

While Pinnawala plays a role in elephant conservation, it has also sparked discussions about ethical tourism and captive animal welfare. Ongoing efforts aim to balance conservation with responsible tourism practices. The orphanage remains a significant attraction, educating visitors about elephant protection while allowing them to witness these gentle giants in a safe setting.
