Sri Padhasthanaya

Sri Padhastanaya, commonly known as Adam’s Peak, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka. The mountain is known for the sacred footprint at its summit, which is believed to have religious significance in multiple faiths. Buddhists regard it as the footprint of the Buddha, Hindus attribute it to Lord Shiva, Muslims associate it with Adam, and Christians link it to St. Thomas. This diverse religious connection makes Adam’s Peak a symbol of spiritual unity.

The pilgrimage to the peak takes place primarily during the season from December to May, with thousands of devotees climbing the 5,500 steps leading to the summit. The journey is marked by a series of resting points and temples along the way. Reaching the top before sunrise offers a breathtaking view of the famous “shadow of the peak,” where the mountain’s triangular shadow appears to float over the landscape.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Adam’s Peak is part of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, a protected area known for its biodiversity. The mountain is home to rare flora and fauna, making it important not only for religious and cultural reasons but also for environmental conservation. The combination of faith, tradition, and natural beauty makes Sri Padhastanaya one of the most significant landmarks in Sri Lanka.
