Udawalawa National Park

Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s best locations for spotting wild elephants. Located in the southern part of the island, the park was established in 1972 to provide a sanctuary for animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Today, it serves as a vital habitat for over 500 elephants, making it one of the best places in Asia to observe these majestic creatures up close.

In addition to elephants, Udawalawe is home to a variety of wildlife, including sambar deer, water buffalo, crocodiles, and an array of bird species. The park’s grassland and scrub forest ecosystem closely resemble the African savannah, creating an ideal environment for wildlife observation. The Udawalawe Reservoir not only supports the park’s biodiversity but also plays a crucial role in irrigation and agriculture in the surrounding region.

The park is also associated with conservation efforts, particularly through the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home. This facility rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves before releasing them into the wild. Visitors can witness feeding sessions, gaining insight into Sri Lanka’s commitment to wildlife protection. Udawalawe’s combination of accessibility, conservation efforts, and wildlife diversity makes it a popular choice for safari experiences.
