Wilpattu National Park is the largest and one of the oldest wildlife reserves in Sri Lanka, covering over 1,300 square kilometers in the northwestern part of the island. Unlike other national parks, Wilpattu is characterized by a unique landscape of natural lakes, known as “villus,” which serve as watering holes for animals. This natural feature sets the park apart and makes it a prime location for wildlife viewing.
Wilpattu is home to a rich variety of animals, including leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and crocodiles. The park is particularly known for its elusive leopard population, offering visitors a chance to witness these magnificent big cats in a less crowded setting compared to Yala. The dense forests and open grasslands provide an ideal environment for a wide range of species.
Historically, Wilpattu is linked to ancient Sri Lankan civilizations. It is believed to be the location of Kudiramalai, an ancient port city associated with the arrival of Prince Vijaya, the legendary founder of Sri Lanka’s first kingdom. The blend of historical significance and unspoiled wilderness makes Wilpattu a unique and less-commercialized safari destination.
