Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife sanctuary, known for its high density of leopards. Spanning over 979 square kilometers in the southeastern part of the country, Yala is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including dry forests, grasslands, and lagoons. It provides a habitat for a variety of animals, including elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and numerous bird species.
Beyond its rich biodiversity, Yala holds historical and cultural significance. Ancient ruins and rock inscriptions found within the park suggest that it was once home to Buddhist monasteries. The Sithulpawwa Rock Temple, located inside the park, dates back over 2,000 years and remains a place of religious importance. These remnants highlight the deep connection between nature and Sri Lanka’s historical heritage.
The park is divided into several zones, with only some open to the public for safaris. These guided tours offer visitors a chance to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. The combination of thrilling wildlife encounters and cultural history makes Yala one of the most sought-after destinations for nature enthusiasts.
